History of the Betta

What you see today does not come close to resembling the drab green/brown, small finned fish that is the wild form.
I will try to give you brief but complete descriptions of the different Betta Strains. I will use some information I have out of the IBC Standards along with my own knowledge to the best of my ability as a Betta breeder, however, I will only use small amounts of information out of the IBC Standards because I feel that this info should be available to those who are members of IBC. In short, if you want it all, pay for your membership to IBC and get the books!!! (You couldn't make a more intelligent decision if you want to breed Bettas!!!)

Feeding your Betta fry:

During the first month the fry need to be fed at least two times a day, if you have the time and can feed them three times a day would be better. Just remember to clean out the remaining food when they are done eating.

The Betta Myths

Breeding Angelfish

Angelfish are quite easy to breed, once you can find a pair. It is near impossible to sex angels, so you have to buy about six young angels and let them pair off themselves.

Pet Fish: Can fish be pets?

Can fish be pets? Yes, of course they can! I have over 1000 pets in my home. When I make that statement I get a lot of strange looks and then the subject is changed very quickly! But why? Is it because I can’t put a fish on a lead and take it for a walk?

The Axolotl: Rare and beautiful!

As long ago as 1996, these were declared “Critically Endangered” by the IUCN, http://www.iucnredlist.org and as such, are in need of help. The natural habitat has all but disappeared, so almost all the ones you find now are captive bred, and then very rarely seen.

Water Chemistry, why is it important?

Water Chemistry: What about it and why should we worry? The chemistry of the water in a fish tank is very important. A fish tank is a closed environment, where everything that goes into it affects the chemistry in one way or another.

Snails and Limpets

Snails and limpets have a single coiled, one piece shell. New shell growth is on the outermost part of the coil. Some shells are round and flat and some are like a cone with a point.
When you are looking for that perfect betta to bring home, making sure that your fish is healthy is #1! There are some very important things to look for, both behavioral and physical when you are in the process of picking your betta. Just a little tidbit, the factors that are listed here are pretty much for purchasing from a pet store, but it also helps in the consideration of any fish.
